Meltdown and Spectre Flaws

Seen the news about Meltdown and Spectre?

Meltdown and Spectre are another set of security flaws but this time they impact processors built within the last 20 years. Reports from Intel, AMD and some ARM (Mainly found in Mobile phone and Tablets) processors have an issue. This lets attackers gain access to areas of the processor that shouldn’t be accessed.

How do we fix it?

Patching your OS with the latest security updates is part one of the fix. The second is updating the code for your processor. Windows 10, Mac OS X have already had the OS patch. While Windows 7, 8 have had the patches pulled for now after issues with the code for AMD processors caused infinite boot loops or just crashed the PC.

Intel and AMD pledge to get fixes for all of the “supported” processors over the coming weeks. Not bad if you think about the number of processors out now.

Reports are coming in of performance hits being felt by computers that run the patches. So far from what we have seen it mainly impacts the performance when the processor is patched. However, a performance hit is still felt (even though it’s very small) when the OS is patched.

How is Morph ICT dealing with Meltdown and Spectre?

Our policy of patch monitoring and application of missing/needed patches means our Windows 10 clients are already getting the latest patch from Microsoft. Legacy devices running Windows 7 will get the patch as soon as it is available. iOS devices on our MDM system are also constantly updated and monitored.

Part two of the fix will be applied as soon as patches are made available for the processors.

Update your anti-virus!

Keep your anti-virus updated with the latest definitions. Your anti-virus should already be updated with tools that will help find warn you about websites and other attack vectors that may be targeting your devices.
